Fermented veggies are becoming all the rage. That's funny since fermentation is one of the oldest, tastiest and most fun ways to preserve food. Do it yourself with easy ingredients for a fraction of the cost of buying it at the store. In this hands-on class you'll learn how to slice, salt, and stomp your way into your own fermented creations like sauerkraut, kimchi, and more. Come on y'all, even babies love this stuff! Optional: bring cutting board, knife, large mixing bowl, quart jar. Mary Margaret Ripley and her family like to have fermented foods as a part of their everyday lives. Since 2006 she has fermented many kinds of foods, especially veggies from her family farm. Join her for a busy, fun, and friendly class that just might get you hooked, too!

The Reformation: Events That Changed a World

2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the start of the Reformation, an epoch which changed Western Civilization forever. In this course, John Battick, Ph.D. (U. of M. Assoc. Prof. of History Emeritus), will conduct a seminar-like class focusing on the causes, course and results of the Reformation. Students will be required to read ahead for each class after the first session and be prepared to discuss the many facets and factors of this momentous period. This class will consist of six 1-hour sessions (but may occasionally run over an hour). 1) Introduction: the map of Europe in 1500: various political divisions; the Church in 1500: structure, doctrine, practices; some precursors of the reformation. 2) Martin Luther; the Protestant reformation. 3) The Church of England; Calvinist churches. 4) Reform of the Catholic Church. 5) Wars of religion. 6) Wrap-up: the consequences of religious differences.

The Submarine from Bushnell’s Turtle to the Ballistic Missile Boat

The nuclear-powered submarine may very well be the ultimate strategic weapon. This short course will trace the underwater weapons system from its late 18th century beginnings through the present attack and ballistic missile vessels. This class will consist of four 1-hour sessions: 1) Early attempts at an underwater weapons system. 2) The diesel-powered submersible in peace and war. 3)My life in a submarine and the building industry. 4) The possibilities of the nuclear-powered submarine. Instructor John Battick earned a Ph.D. from Boston University with a dissertation on the growth of sea power in mid-17th century England. He also served on a diesel-powered submarine during the Korean War period, was a structural design draftsman at Electric Boat Company in New London, and taught naval and maritime history at UM for over ten years.

Ukulele!

Bring your own ukulele and learn to play or brush up on your ukulele skills. Learn how to tune your uke, get to know the basic chords and strumming patterns for many favorite tunes, and, especially, have fun playing and singing. The ukulele is a four string, fun and easy to play instrument for all occasions. This class is open to children 10 and older accompanied by an adult. Susan Abel has been playing the ukulele and other string instruments for years and currently directs the DRHS Ukulele Club, a multigenerational group who performs around the area.
