Raku Pottery Fall 2017

$115

with Jemma Gascoine

Calendar Oct 5, 2017 at 5 pm

Raku dates back to the 16th century Japanese Tea Ceremony and means ‘Joy’. It’s a low-fire process whereby the glazes produce metallic lusters and crackling. No two pots ever come out the same. With Raku firing, the potter removes the vessel from the kiln while it is still very hot, red, and glowing. He or she then uses tongs to move the piece from the kiln to a prepped trash can or ‘reduction chamber’ with combustible materials inside. The class will be mainly a hand-building class so no experience is necessary but there are potters wheels available if students want to ‘have a go’. All clay, glaze and firing costs are included in the tuition. Please wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind dirtying and tie hair back. Jemma Gascoine has a studio and gallery in Blanchard TWP and is owner of Monson Pottery Workshop at The Arts Center (formerly Monson Community Center). She had a show of her ceramic sculputre at the Umaine Museum of Art in 2012. She has been selling her work nationally and teaching clay classes to all ages for 11 years.

Throw Your Own Fall 2017

$50

with Elisa Schine

Calendar Oct 3, 2017 at 6 pm

Learn to throw your own earthenware bowl on a pottery wheel! We will learn the fundamentals of the craft, all the way from choosing your clay to glazing and firing your own pieces. Sitting at the pottery wheel, you may find the meditation that comes with centering your clay and the thrill of watching the shape of your bowl emerge. Come get your hands in the clay and throw your own! Please bring a basic pottery set of a needle, wire, sponge, and rubber rib. Elisa Schine has been studying pottery with Jemma Gascoine for the past three years. She works as a boat-builder at Northwoods Canoe Company in Atkinson, but on a whim in 2013, she attended a PVAEC beginning pottery course. In that class, she discovered the joy of throwing pots and that she couldn't get enough of it! Elisa continues to experiment with her own work, some of which is on display at the Monson Pottery Workshop, but would like to share her love of the craft with others.

Upcycled Christmas Ornament Fall 2017

$10

with Hilda Roberts

Calendar Nov 17, 2017 at 6 pm

Are you tired of those ugly glass balls on your Christmas tree, but you’re not sure what to do with or without them? In this workshop, we will show you how to upcycle these unsightly ornaments into something new and magnificent with decoupage, old paper, and glitter. Bring your own ornaments (glass or plastic balls) or use some of ours. It’s fun but it’s messy. Bring a pumice stone to wash your hands if you have one. Hilda Roberts enjoys craft projects that utilize natural or recycled materials. When she’s not foraging for crafting supplies, she can be found exploring beautiful Piscataquis County with her chocolate lab, Brook Trout, and working as PVAEC’s administrative assistant.
