The PVAEC State of Maine approved CNA course includes classroom work, skills labs, and clinical experience. Candidates must present either a high school diploma or HiSET/GED. Enrollment is limited to 10. The admission process includes enrollment into our Career Readiness Program, a criminal background check, placement testing, and a series of meetings with PVAEC staff. The cost of the class is $1,300, which includes tuition, textbook, background check, and state exam. Payment plans and financial assistance may be available to those who qualify.


Admittance to this course includes proof of all required vaccinations for healthcare workers, including the COVID-19 Vaccine series.

Class will be held at our Dexter Learning Center and will run on Monday and Wednesday evenings with some weekends required.

Piscataquis River Walks Fall 2022

David and students will gather at PHEC, and then meet up at a variety of to be determined locations along the Piscataquis River - all meeting areas will be easily accessible with parking areas. The walks will consist of looking for a variety of primitive tools and indigenous plants as well as a focus on fall harvesting of plants and berries, nuts and trees. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear.

Spanish for Everyone Fall 2022

Learn Spanish in a fun and natural “whole language” environment. Speakers of varying levels interact, similar to what happens in the real world, and everyone learns. Beginners can expect to learn greetings, introductions, and simple phrases while more advanced speakers will expand their vocabulary and understanding of grammar. Kathleen Cardin, CPM is a nurse and midwife. She is not a native Spanish speaker but has been blessed to have the opportunity to learn Spanish while growing up in South Florida. This has allowed her to travel to Latin America and speak with the interesting people she has met there. Kathleen says she loves teaching Spanish because it’s fun and fulfilling to see students “grow” in the language. Optional Textbook: Spanish Now! Level 1 (Silverstein, Wald & Pomerantz).

Arts and Crafts with Shirley - Truck or Treat Fall 2022

Students always walk away from Shirley’s class with a beautiful piece of art, a smile on their face, and new friends! All supplies provided by Shirley, but please bring your own brushes if you have them.

Creative Calligraphy Fall 2022

Join us for two hours of creative and fun stylized writing. Use your new skills to create greeting cards, envelopes, posters and so much more! Very little supplies are needed and all can be reused at home. Bring your imagination, and let's have some fun! Please bring your colored pencils, pencil, eraser and Pigma Micron 01 pen. Lorna Schriver has been involved in painting and creative artwork for most of her life. She has been a founding member of the Southwest Calligraphy Guild, Las Cruces, New Mexico for over 15 years, and her work has been published in their calendar.

Place Names of Piscataquis County Fall 2022

This class will focus on Place Names in and around Piscataquis County. We will look into the Native American names in Piscataquis County and research their origin and meaning. We will discuss all the place names Native and Non -Native. Each week, we will discuss a group of four names and talk about what we know as well as what we can learn about it. This will be a fun class where David can learn from your knowledge, as much as you can from his!

Drawing - Mixed Media Techniques Fall 2022

First, let’s dust off that drawing kit and get ready to explore mixed media and all its beauty. Use micropens, watercolor pencils and watercolors to create a life-like and loveable young fox pup exploring nature around him. Learn a variety of techniques to create texture and depth for a fun and realistic piece - mastery at its finest not to mention lots of fun while learning what makes artwork outstanding and your own. Fundamentals of art elements and principles will be touched upon to round out this class on Mixed Media Techniques. Supplies Needed: 2h, 4h graphite pencils, assorted watercolors pencils, water colors, permanent fine line drawing pens (black, brown or sepia are preferred), liner brush, small short round, lg watercolor brush (ETC), waterbin, odorless turp. tortillions, kneaded eraser, 9x12 – or larger smooth bristol or mixed media pad.

Feel the mist on your face from the rolling surf and waves as you complete this painting of Coastal Maine. Learn the techniques of creating realistic looking seascapes in vibrant acrylic painting. Supplies Needed: 16x20 stretched canvas, 1-1 1/2” flat shader, ½ flat #10, #2 round -this is my medium round, #1script liner, ¾ mop or soft scruffy, small stiff scruffy or old brushes, sea sponge, q tips, Divided water bin, paint trays, paper towel or cloth, lt brown watercolor pencil, acrylic retarding medium, SET of basic artist acrylic colors: Mars black, Titanium white, Burnt umber, Ultramarine blue, Thalo blue, Yellow light, Thio or Acra Magenta or quinacridone, and cad red.
