Penobscot Bay Sail & Power Squadron Offers “America’s Boating Course”
with Dan Seneca
The basic four-evening (8 hour + exam) course is designed to familiarize the student with the fundamentals of safe boating and to qualify for certification in most states that require boating education before operating a watercraft. Coverage includes safety equipment, trip planning, navigation rules and aids, state and federal regulations, anchoring, dealing with adverse conditions and emergencies, communications, trailering, and knots and lines. The information is useful for users of all sorts of watercraft (power, sail, paddle) and for both ocean and freshwater boating. This course includes an examination. An optional Part II course extension (2 weeks, four hours) introduces students to navigation and the use of charts - important information on determining where you are and how to go where you wish to go safely. Part II requires not homework or exam. The cost of the course is $15 plus $26 for the student manual (which may be shared). Students who wish to continue through Part II may wish to purchase a course plotter for $7.50 and dividers for $15 although these are not required.
