with Trisha Smith

If you have a sunny windowsill, you can grow microgreens for (almost) instant gratification as well as start seedlings to plant in your garden later in spring. Most vegetables need outdoor sun and soil to grow to maturity, but tasty and nutritious microgreens are harvested young, and seedlings will be planted outside when conditions allow. This is a hands-on workshop-prepare to get dirty! Soil, seed, containers, and printed instructional handouts are provided. Trisha is UMaine Extension's Community Education Assistant for Home Horticulture in Piscataquis County.

Calendar Apr 11, 2020 at 12:30 pm

Until you listen to yourself and stand up for what YOU need, “they” win. Whether it's fearful friends, begrudging family, social media overload, well-meaning and well-educated physicians, or misinformed newscasts, my goal is for you to feel a shift in how you perceive and react to information. We'll uncover marketing scams, how to shop and prep food, spices, and inexpensive, clean foods to have on hand.

Who Wants to be a Beekeeper? Spring 2020

$5

with Owen Blackden

Calendar Apr 11, 2020 at 12:30 pm

Bees are all the buzz and for good reason, too! Since the late 1990s, beekeepers around the world have observed the mysterious and sudden disappearance of bees, and report unusually high rates of decline in honeybee colonies (greenpeace.org). An estimated ? of all food is pollination dependent, so no bees = no food! In addition to bee conservation and habitat protection, the benefits of beekeeping are numerous. Honey not only tastes great, it also has many health benefits. Produce your own beeswax for candles, creams, lip balms and more. Bees will pollinate your gardens and fruit trees, making them more healthy. Please join Owen Blackden, an experienced local beekeeper for this one-night workshop where he’ll cover the history of beekeeping, present day beekeeping, equipment, and best placement for keeping bees. Owen has been keeping bees for 15 years and is a past president of the Penquis Beekeeper chapter of Maine State Beekeepers.
