Introduction to Fly Fishing Spring 2025

This course is designed to get you solidly grounded in the fundamentals needed to enjoy fly fishing. Topics covered include tackle selection and assembly, knots, fly casting, fish foods, artificial flies, fly fishing strategies, entomology, and wading safety. After completing this course, you should have all the understanding and skills necessary to catch fish with a fly rod on your own. This course will be taught in Orono by Kevin Tracewski, a Registered Maine Guide and author of the best selling book, A Fisherman’s Guide to Maine. Kevin has taught this class for 30 years and has two degrees in entomology and received an Outstanding Teacher Award at UMaine. All supplies are provided. Kids 14 and under should be accompanied by an adult.

Needle Felting Spring Frog Spring 2025

Create a charming turtle using both wet and needle felting techniques. On the first day, you’ll design, felt, and block the shell, and build the armature. The second day focuses on crafting the body, tail, legs, and face, before assembling the turtle by sewing the top and bottom shells together. Prerequisite: Previous wet felting experience is required, such as the bookmark or art felt class. Bring: 2 large pieces of bubble wrap, 2 bath towels, a dish towel, small pliers, wire cutters (if available), a sturdy long needle, scissors, and needle felting tools if you have them.
Needle Felting Flower Power Spring 2025

Create a vibrant spring flower to brighten your day while waiting for the real blooms! Wet felt a flower that can be turned into a brooch, magnet, or wired for a vase display. Choose your main color, embellish with accent fibers, and design a unique center. Your flower will be wet when you take it home, with its full color and shine revealed as it dries. Instructions for drying will be provided. Beginners are welcome, though attending the bookmark or art felt class beforehand can be helpful. Bring: 2 pieces of bubble wrap, a bath towel, a dish towel, and scissors.
Microsoft Excel Power Tools (May)

Microsoft Excel Power Tools Power Query allows you to import and shape data. It has an easy to use interface, powerful tools to import and clean data. Power Pivot allows data modeling and calculations. It easily handles millions of rows of data and has modeling tools for efficient data storage and analysis. Power BI (Business Intelligence) is a complete business intelligence tool. It features incredible visual options, has simple built-in interactive options, fantastic graphs and allows easy sharing of data. The design of this course includes 2-3 hours of work with the software between sessions to gain maximum benefit from the sessions. This is an online class using ZOOM. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey included in your automated receipt so the instructor can tailor the course to meet your needs. You will want to have Microsoft Excel on your computer for this workshop and many people find it helpful to have two monitors though it is certainly not necessary to benefit from the sessions. There are two ways to accomplish this: 1) attach an external screen to your computer (contact our program if you need technical assistance with that); 2) using two computers (one for Excel and the other for the ZOOM meeting.

Fishing Creel Basket Spring 2025

While traditionally used for fishing, this beautiful basket is perfect for picnics, gathering vegetables, or collecting treasures during your woodland foraging adventures. The basket measures approximately 13" wide, 8" tall, and 8" deep. In this class, you’ll craft the lid, carefully cut to fit, and attach it with a durable piano hinge. The instructor will go through the process of making the basket step-by-step ensuring all will walk away with a finished basket.
